Honors Social Studies

Students who are enrolled in the Honors Social Studies courses will be learning materials that is enriched and extended. The types of enrichment or extensions will vary by class and year depending on the needs and interests of the students.

6th Grade

Honors Social Studies focuses on the study of the Western Hemisphere specifically the study of Canada and Latin America. During the study of Canada and Latin America (Mexico, Central America, Caribbean, and South America) students will compare and contrast:

Students will also study and discuss current events in our country and around the world.
 

7th Grade

In seventh grade, students will study the people, culture, and geography of Eastern Hemisphere. It begins with pre-history and continues through the Renaissance up to present day. Students will construct meaningful understandings of fundamental themes in history, geography, and economics regarding persisting regional problems and issues. The course is chronologically organized and regional in scope. It enables the students be view themselves as members of a global community who appreciate diversity in the world.

Students will be expected to make connections between the areas they are studying in the Eastern Hemisphere with current events that occur. Students will be expected to explain these connections either verbally or in written form.

 

8th Grade

The 8th grade curriculum is based on events in American History from the Revolutionary War through the 1900’s. Students will focus on the following:

Student will be asked to think and learn beyond the cognitive level. They will apply their knowledge to gain a deeper appreciation of American democracy and a realization of what skills are needed to maintain the rights established by those who came before us.
